Wheaton retail theft defense lawyerAs we all know, Halloween is just around the corner. If you have a family, then you are likely getting prepared to take your kids out trick-or-treating. The candy bucket has been filled for your neighbors, your safety plan has been completely strategized, and your children are excited to wear their costumes. But what happens if you do not have enough money for any of this? Would you just walk into the store, pick out what you want, and then leave without paying? If you decide to go this route, then you have committed retail theft, and you will likely face some very unfortunate consequences.

How Does Shoplifting Affect the Offender?

There are about 27 million shoplifters in the United States, with at least 10 million people getting caught within the last five years. There is no typical demographic for a shoplifter, as men and women tend to shoplift just as often, and anyone can commit retail theft. Most shoplifters would not commit any other crime than shoplifting, but in Illinois, they will face a Class A misdemeanor for stealing items that have a value of no more than $300, and a Class 4 felony for any subsequent offenses.
